Welcome to
Higham Ferrers
Our historic Market Town,
which was originally known as
Hecham (meaning ‘on a hill’)
spreads along the east bank of
the River Nene, approximately 15
miles from the county town of
Northampton. Many buildings in
the town are steeped in history,
and are associated with our most
famous son, Henry Chichele, who
was born in the town and went
on to become the longest serving
Archbishop of Canterbury.
Chichele built the Bede House
to provide shelter for twelve poor
men and one lady. The ancient
tradition of the Bedesmen is
carried on today and they can be
seen on civic occasions proudly
wearing their blue cloaks.
In recent years the population
of the town has grown
considerably, and currently
stands at approx 8,500. We
welcome everyone to the town
and hope that you will join in the
various clubs and organisations
that are part of Higham Ferrers.
You can pick up a heritage
trail leaflet between 9:30am and
2:30pm Monday to Friday at the
Town Hall; come and discover
for yourself the interesting and
historical sites of Higham Ferrers,
we have many shops, eateries,
pubs and clubs for you to visit
whilst you discover the town.
On the last Saturday of each
month (except December
which is the Saturday before
Christmas) our Farmers’ Market
takes place between 9am and
1pm on the Market Square. The
market offers an array of locally
produced products to buy, there
are also nearby stalls offering
tea and cake at the Bede House
and a chance to visit the Church
and memorial garden.
Many of our events are
organised by local volunteer
groups together with the Town
Council. You are welcome to
come along to one or all of
our many events that are held
throughout the year.
