carried on from early times, it
grew comparatively slowly. It
was one of the leading boot,
shoe and leather towns in the
county because hides were
abundant from the cattle
that were farmed in the Nene
Valley and the river provided
easy and cheap transport.
The Nene Valley Railway
opened in the town in
the mid 19th century but
was subsequently closed
completely in 1969.
Higham Ferrers has retained
many of its historic limestone
buildings in the town centre.
Rushden is now much larger
than Higham and growth
patterns have seen the
convergence of the two towns,
but they both still retain their
distinctive characteristics.
Higham Ferrers has now

shared in the house building
boom of the last two decades,
expanding considerably with
the construction of the Kings
Meadow Lane estates. There
are now 3,285 dwellings in the
town (2011 census).

TOWN TWINNING
Our twin town is Hachenburg
which is situated in the
Westerwald region of Germany,
about 95km east of Cologne.
Hachenburg is very similar
to Higham Ferrers in that it
has a well-preserved town
centre with many beautiful
old buildings in a style called
Fachwerke in German and halftimbered in English.
The town is in the heart
of picturesque countryside
and is close to the area
called Kroppacher Schweiss
which is reminiscent of
Switzerland, with small villages
nestling in wooded valleys.
The magnificent Abbey at
Marienstatt is also nearby.
The Twinning Group
was founded in 1990 and
promotes friendship between
people of all ages in the two
communities.

obtained either from the Town
Hall or by contacting Kay
