East Northamptonshire Council
came into being on 1st April
1974. The word ‘District’ was
dropped from the council’s title
on 8th January 1996. All
Departments of the current
council are now located at
Thrapston, although the council
also has Customer Services
Centres in Rushden and Oundle.
East Northamptonshire
Council are responsible for:
community partnerships,
economic development, Council
Tax and business rates
collection, electoral registration
and elections, housing benefits
and Council Tax, housing
register, leisure, planning,
tourism and waste collection.

was originally formed in 1889 by
the Local Government Act 1888.

into 57 electoral divisions, which
return a total of 57 Councillors.
The headquarters of the County
Council is in Northampton.
As a non-metropolitan County
Council, the council is
responsible for education,
social services, libraries, main
roads, public transport policy
and fire services, trading
standards and strategic
planning. There is currently a
new building being built to
house the County Council.
