The Churchyard Cross

he Churchyard Cross named the Wardeyn Cross
dates from the early 14th century; the carved top is a
restoration of the original, completed by the architect Temple
Moore in 1919 as a war memorial. There were four crosses
in the town, in addition to the churchyard cross there is the
Market Cross in the commercial centre of the town, the
Spital Cross was where the Hospital was near Tollbar, and
Stump Cross was at the North End. The Wardeyn Cross shaft
is original, but has been added to in later years.
