Saint Mary’s Church
7
S
t. Mary’s Church has a
superbly carved steeple
soaring to 170ft. Don’t
miss the magnificent 13th
century west doorway, with
stone carvings depicting the
life of Christ. The unusual
double-naved interior
is rich with woodwork,
dominated by a Rood
Screen by Sir Ninian
Comper, splendid stained
glass windows and fine
brasses. The Wardeyn Cross,
in the churchyard, signified
the religious centre of the
town and dates from the
early 14th century.
