A
simple Motte and Bailey (mound and enclosure) was
built soon after the Conquest (1066) by William
Peverel. The remains of the mound lie at the North West
corner of the churchyard; the bailey overlain by the car
park and John White Close. Later a stone castle replaced
this, today the only remaining part of the castle is part
of the dovecote which stands in the garden of the Green
Dragon Hotel.
