High Street is the traditional birthplace of Higham
Ferrers’ most famous son, Henry Chichele. Henry’s
family were successful farmers, with his father being Mayor
of Higham in 1373 and his brother holding the position
of Mayor of London from 1411-1421. Henry was taken
under the wing of the Bishop of Winchester and went on
to become a priest and diplomat. He served as Chancellor
of Salisbury and Bishop of St. David’s, before becoming
Archbishop of Canterbury in 1414. Chichele held this
position for 29 years until his death in 1443, he is buried in
Canterbury Cathedral.
