The heart of Rushden is an
expansive Conservation Area,
with a significant number of
designated heritage assets.
Most notable is the Grade I
listed St Mary’s Church built
in the 1300s, its grand spire
stretching 172ft in height
dominates the town’s skyline.
Other Grade II listed buildings,
include Rushden Hall which
dates back to the 14th century,
former shoe factories, former
farmhouses and rectories.
Rushden Town Council has
produced a heritage trail which
encompasses the main heritage
buildings in the town. The trail
gives a flavour of the town’s
H.E. BATES TRAIL
One of the most
accomplished and
successful writers of
modern times, Herbert
Ernest Bates, was born in
Rushden in 1905. The H.E.
Bates trail produced by
Rushden & District History
Society highlights the key
places in Rushden that
featured in this famous local

This significant author wrote 126 major works,
323 short stories and novellas, 194 essays, articles, commentaries and introductions as well as a
number of poems including “Evening” which was
written and published when he was 16 years old.
