Opened in 1905, Rushden’s
library was provided through
the benevolence of Andrew
Carnegie, the Scottish-born
philanthropist, and by shoe
manufacturer, John Claridge,
who wrote to Andrew
Carnegie in 1902 requesting
financial assistance to
build a library for the
people of Rushden.
Major refurbishment took
place in 1995. In partnership
with East Northamptonshire
Council, a magnificent
atrium was built providing
the building with disabled
access for the first time
and allowing the library to
expand considerably. This
allowed the best features
of the old library to be
retained. Rushden’s is one
of the few Carnegie library
buildings in the country
retaining its use as a library.
